solar cooking

Living in Texas with lots of sun...too much in June-Aug usually, I do a lot of solar cooking. I have two Global Sun Ovens. These are great simple-designed ovens with tempered glass covers with catches and a seal that keeps the heat in. The reflectors are anodized Al. There is a bar that allows you to tilt the oven toward the sun and just as importantly the cookware you put inside sets on a levelator which is a free swinging platform that rests loosely on two screws, one on either side of the inside so that as you tilt the oven toward the sun, the food inside stays parallel with the ground and thus does not spill. Temps of 350 F. are common on a clear day. If someone wants to do some solar cooking but not buy solar ovens, you can make your own out of cardboard and tinfoil. Then the food is placed inside a black pot and the pot is placed inside an oven bag (turkey bag). Temps of 250 F are common with this arrangement. Anything you can put in a crockpot works in a solar oven. Youtube has quite a bit on the Global Sun Oven plus some homemade setups.
