elcaro's Hilltop Conversion

Postby elcaro » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:14 am

Hi Everyone,
I finally completed my electric bike project and I am so happy with this 'pro-kit'.

My bike is a http://www.ruggedcycles.com which is made specific for industrial use. It has a drive shaft, Shimaro 3-speed Hub, and airless tires.

This tire is made with a proprietary urethane that will stand up to years of use and the build quality is fantastic. Good for up to 200 lbs per wheel and is designed for 95lbs psi!

I had to order the 'pro-kit' because of the tires and had to lace & true the front wheel myself. That was the reason why I asked so many questions regarding other's experience in lacing their wheels.

You can imagine my expression of joy when I plugged the battery to the motor and pressed the 'button' and watched and heard the front wheel rotate! I felt like a 11 year old boy.

I went for a ride touring the neighborhood and as you all might have experienced everyone had questions of curiosity and I enjoyed showing off my Hill Topper kit.

Here are some pics:

That looks terrific, elcaro -- the wheel build looks great, and the bike itself is really something!

And I know that feeling when you first run the Hill Topper motor after lacing it. :)

Hi T.Pekoe

Thanks for the kind words. I like your set-back seat post on your bike. I'm using the same seat (Cloud-9) and find it very comfortable.

After I laced-up the Hilltop electric motor to my front wheel my airless tires was uncomfortable and when I rode my bike I could feel every bump of the road on the front fork especially now with the heavy hub. I felt my whole body vibrate!

I believe the electric motor (hub) weights about 11lbs. and along with the heavy solid rubber airless tire, I found the ride to be too hard plus I worried about damaging the motor because of the hard ride. So, I removed the airless tires and added 26" wide (beach cruiser) tires with tubes and it feels so much better, especially when I feel that bounce while riding on bumpy pavements and or dirt roads.
